Pearl Laser Procedure

Sean-Doherty-MD-Boston-amp-amp-Concord-MA-PearlPearl is a fractional laser used for facial rejuvenation and it is made by Cutera. It combines the gentleness of non-invasive treatments with resurfacing lasers. The Pearl treats sun-damaged as well as aging skin. It works by reducing wrinkles and pore size while improving uneven tone, texture and sun damage with fewer treatments and less overall recovery then with more aggressive technologies.
The Pearl is a Fractional Ablative Laser. “Fractional” indicates that the laser treats a fraction of the surface of the skin and leaves a fraction of the surface untouched. This allows for faster healing. “Ablative” indicates that the Pearl addresses all layers of the skin. This results in a more aggressive, but more effective treatment.

During the procedure, the most superficial layer of skin is lasered with pulses of light that target water in a pre-selected pattern. This laser simultaneously sends heat to the deeper layers of skin to provide long-term benefits. To minimize downtime, there is a natural protective dressing that forms on the skin during the restorative process. This occurs as a result of the laser treatment. On day 3 or 4, this natural dressing will slough off, leaving healthier and more vibrant skin. Patients report overall smoothness, skin clarity, as well as softness.
This is a 20-30 minute treatment requiring approximately 3 – 6 days of downtime. It is suggested that patients avoid scheduling the treatment for at least 7-12 days prior to any important social or work event.

Are there any restrictions after a Pearl factional laser treatment?

After treatment, the skin can look and feels sunburned. For 3-4 days, patients will gently wash the face and apply ointment. During the healing process patients do not wear sunscreen. Pearl fractional patients wear protective clothing and limit sun. It is recommended that patients stay indoors for at least 2-3 days.

How many treatments are recommended?

Some patients may require 2-3 treatments for best results done monthly. Some patients may see the desired results after only one treatment.

How does the Pearl fractional laser compare to other laser and facial treatments?

The Pearl fractional laser is an effective treatment addressing uneven texture, fine lines, as well as discoloration with minimal skin care necessary afterwards. This treatment provides significant results with even just a single treatment, though a series of treatments might be recommended. This is an aggressive treatment that has significant results. It can successfully be combined with facial surgical treatments like a facelift or neck lift.

Who is a good candidate for the Pearl fractional laser?

Patients with wrinkles, light to medium skin tones and mild to moderate sun damage are ideal candidates.
Is this an FDA cleared device?

Yes. It is FDA cleared for skin rejuvenation. The Pearl laser was approved in March 2007 for the treatment of wrinkles.
