Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction)
Almost 20 percent of men in the Boston area are affected by some degree of Gynecomastia, This is the development of breast tissue in men. Often, the cause is unknown, though some medical conditions and the use of certain drugs can be associated.
If you are one of the many men with this common problem, Dr. Doherty would be happy to offer male breast reduction as a solution. Gynecomastia surgery serves to remove any glandular tissue and excess fat from the breast area; the result is a firm, flat, and masculine chest.
Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?
Since there are many causes of gynecomastia, Dr. Doherty will talk to you during your consultation about lifestyle changes that may reduce the amount of existing breast tissue without the need for surgery. If you are overweight, an attempt to lose weight through exercise and diet is the first step. Drugs, such as anabolic steroids, marijuana, or excessive alcohol, also cause Gynecomastia. Before considering male breast reduction, patients must discontinue use of these substances. Dr. Doherty would be happy to discuss with you how exercise and diet changes may help improve your chest contour.
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Depending on the amount and type of breast tissue, Boston plastic surgeon Sean Doherty may use one of two male breast reduction techniques. In patients whose gynecomastia is caused mostly by excess fat, Dr. Doherty performs liposuction of the chest area. Through a tiny incision, he will suction out the fat with a small tube (called a cannula). This surgery is performed as a day procedure in the operating room, with or without general anesthesia.
In patients whose breast enlargement is due to glandular tissue in addition to excess fat, Dr. Doherty will remove the excess breast tissue and use liposuction to remove and contour the excess fatty tissue in the area. The breast tissue is typically under the areola and nipple area and is removed via a small incision around the areola.
After gynecomastia surgery, patients experience moderate bruising and swelling in their chest. Most of these effects will resolve after two weeks or so, with the majority of the swelling gone at six weeks after the operation. Final surgical results are usually visible at that point. When you come to our Boston-area office for a male breast reduction consultation with Dr. Doherty, he will be able to give you specific instructions to make your gynecomastia treatment a success. Some of the most common concerns men have about their body is the shape of their abdomen. Even athletic men, can’t reach maximum improvement in appearance of their abdomen with diet and exercise alone. As men age, their bodies deposit disproportionate and unwanted amounts of fat in isolated areas known as “lipodystrophy”. In addition, excess or extra skin in the abdominal area can lead to a loose, lax and wrinkled look, even though the muscles underneath may be well-defined and developed. To highlight the healthier body underneath, liposuction and/ or an abdominoplasty may be used to remove the excess fat and skin. The result is a more sculpted, visually appealing appearance. Dr. Doherty offers an array of body contouring procedures that address these concerns and more.
