The Rise and Rise of “Bro-tox”

When you think of the typical Botox user, who do you picture? Do you imagine an older woman who’s looking to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? Do you envision a younger woman who’s hoping to get a head start on the anti-aging process?

While popular culture may depict women as the most frequent recipients of Botox injections, it turns out that the rise of “Bro-tox” – Botox injections for men – may quickly put that stereotype to rest.

For board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Doherty, the popularity of Botox among male clients comes as no surprise. Both of his practices in downtown Boston and Brookline, MA have seen a recent explosion in male clients requesting this procedure. In fact, he estimates that as many as ten to twenty percent of his Botox patients are men.

When examined as a nationwide statistic, the evidence is even more compelling – there’s been an astonishing 300% increase in men undergoing Botox injections in the last 15 years.

“I think it can be contributed to the rising desire for men to look younger at work,” Dr. Doherty points out. “These days, we want the experienced CEO or team leader, but we don’t want him to look tired.

“This means there’s been rising pressure on men to look young and refreshed, while still maintaining the experience that helps them climb up the company ladder,” he adds.

Other factors increasing the popularity of Botox for men include:

  • Easy availability, as more plastic surgery practices are offering Botox treatments for men;
  • Wider acceptance, since more men are discovering Botox isn’t “just” for women
  • Youth value, especially in the workplace – with more Millennials entering the workplace, this means older generations are feeling the pressure to look and act younger.

Men can start maintaining their appearance as early as their late 20s when many wrinkles and lines start to form along the forehead region. However, it’s recommended that male patients turn to experienced plastic surgeons like Dr. Doherty for Botox injections. Dr. Doherty ensures that Botox injections produce natural and understated results, which are perfect for men who don’t want to appear “done.”
