Despite its continued reign as the most popular aesthetic surgical procedure in the world, there is a subset of women who have always felt that a traditional breast augmentation was not the right fit for them. The end result was simply too much volume. Yet these are patients who would still like a different size and shape to their breasts. Until recently, these women felt they simply had to settle for doing nothing. However, the Motiva® Preservé procedure provides patients who would like a smaller breast augmentation with a safe, effective option that has the additional benefits of being a less invasive procedure that is also performed under less anesthesia so the recovery may be faster.
Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Sean Doherty, is an expert in all areas of breast surgery. For almost 20 years, he has placed hundreds of implants in his Boston area patients, and performs both primary breast augmentation procedures and mastopexy augmentations. As a surgeon who prides himself on delivering safe, long-lasting and natural looking results, he is excited to be an early adopter of Motiva® Preservé. This is a procedure that fills the gap that has long existed in the treatment options available for women who want less volume than what was available with a traditional breast augmentation. As with any aesthetic procedure, the critical component to an excellent result is proper patient selection. An aesthetic procedure can only be effective if it is the correct one for your needs, individual anatomy, and desired outcome so scheduling an in-person consultation is highly recommended.
Breast Augmentation Consultation

During your meeting, Dr. Doherty will listen attentively to what it is that bothers you about your body contour. He will ask a lot of in-depth questions about your:
- Medical history
- Family history
- Lifestyle
- Whether or not you smoke
- How your body recovered from any prior procedures, including non-surgical
Part of the goal with this series of questions is for him to get a more complete understanding of how your body recovers from trauma as everyone’s healing process is unique. He will also devote considerable time to reviewing photos of breasts that you like so that he has a clear understanding of the “look” that you are trying to achieve. Dr. Doherty will then conduct a physical exam to assess:
- Native breast volume
- Skin tone & texture
- Quality of your skin & tissues
- Degree of skin laxity, if any
- Nipple position in relation to the inframammary fold
- Chest contour & symmetry irregularities
- Specific chest measurements
The latter includes the width at the base of your breast, often referred to as your breast footprint, as well as the vertical height of your breast. With all of this information, Dr. Doherty can then discuss whether or not the Motiva® Preservé could be right for you.
Ideal Candidate for Motiva® Preservé
The best candidate for the Motiva® Preservé breast augmentation procedure is any woman in:
- Good overall health
- Lower BMI
- Smaller frame
- Desires more subtle enhancement without a lot of upper pole fullness
As mentioned, this may be an ideal procedure for those women who have historically felt that a breast augmentation was not an option as the end “look” was simply too much for them. With Motiva® Preservé, you can get a boost in size and improve breast shape without overwhelming your smaller frame.
Benefits of Motiva® Preservé
In addition to providing women who desire a more subtle enhancement with a viable breast augmentation option, there are additional benefits to the Motiva® Preservé procedure. These include:
- Less invasive
- Preserves natural tissue & chest muscles
- Less chance of implant malposition
- Minimal scarring
- Done under sedation or local anesthesia
- Faster recovery
- Reduced risk of damage to nerves & loss of nipple sensation
The Motiva® Preservé procedure utilizes a unique combination of a specialized, specific set of instruments that separate and stretch your native breast tissue, without cutting, to create the pocket for your implant as well as the implant itself. The Motiva SmoothSilk Ergonomix® breast implant has a unique shell for enhanced biocompatibility.
Motiva® Preservé Procedure in Boston
The procedure is done in an accredited surgery center under sedation or local anesthesia. After numbing the treatment area, Dr. Doherty will make a small incision in the inframammary fold which is the natural crease that exists under your breast. This incision is smaller than the one in a traditional breast augmentation. Next, he will insert the Motiva® Channel Separator. This specialized device, along with the Motiva® Inflatable Balloon, separates your tissues, without actually cutting them, in order to create the pocket in which he will place your new implant. The advantage of this unique technique is not only a smaller incision and faster recovery, but it also preserves the natural functionality of your native breast tissue and nerves which lessens any chance of loss in nipple sensation.
Recovery Considerations with Motiva® Preservé
Given the fact that most Motiva® Preservé procedures can be:
- Performed under sedation or local anesthesia
- Require a smaller incision
- Maintains natural breast anatomy
- Implant placed above the muscle
The recovery period is generally faster and less uncomfortable. Dr. Doherty likes all of his breast augmentation patients to be up and moving around immediately after surgery. It is important to get the blood flowing as it will help to reduce inflammation. However, he does want you to take it easy for the first 2 weeks so no intense exercise until he clears you to return to the gym. Most patients, however, are back to the rest of their normal routine within the first week. With this procedure, light exercise may begin 2 weeks after surgery. So, if you have always wanted just a little more “oomph” in your breasts, make a appointment to come in and discuss whether or not the Motiva® Preservé could be a nice option for delivering your desired result.
