Glowing skin has the power to help you look and feel more vital, youthful and energetic. This is because the human eye perceives a rosy flush as being healthy. And when you look more robust, your self-confidence improves. It is the reason why most of us feel better after a good workout as the blood flow to the face does wonders for your skin and, thus, your mood. So, good skincare is one of the easiest ways to feel like the best version of yourself. There are numerous aesthetic procedures for improving your skin tone and texture. One of the newest is Skinvive by Juvéderm®. As a manufacturer of many of the top dermal fillers as well as Botox®, Allergan has a long and trusted history for creating products that are safe and effective for rejuvenation with minimal side effects. While Skinvive is technically a dermal filler, it does not increase volume in the treatment area. Instead, the goal of a Skinvive by Juvéderm® procedure is to promote hydration and stimulate tissue at the dermal epidermal (DE) junction. The end result is smoother, healthier looking skin that glows despite how few hours of sleep you may have gotten the night before.
Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Sean Doherty, is a strong proponent of proper skincare as your skin is the canvas upon which any other aesthetic procedure rests. It is also one of the most robust ways to look more youthful. He prides himself on staying abreast of the latest innovations, but only if they work. Skinvive by Juvéderm is an effective method for promoting hydration in the facial tissue, regardless of your skin type.
What is Skinvive by Juvéderm®?
Skinvive is a hyaluronic acid (HA) gel that has been specifically modified to be injected as intradermal microdroplets just below the surface of your skin. As the basis for many dermal fillers and skincare products, hyaluronic acid is a fountain of youth for your body. HA is a water attracting molecule that can increase your skin’s ability to retain moisture. Unfortunately, age and exposure to elements such as the sun naturally diminish the level of hyaluronic acid in your skin and tissues. Skinvive by Juvéderm®, however, can help combat the texture changes and dullness that occur with each passing birthday, promoting a smoother, plumper and more glowing countenance.
Benefits of Skinvive by Juvéderm® in Boston
There are innumerable benefits to a Skinvive procedure. It is:
- Effective
- Non-surgical
- Minimal downtime
- FDA approved
- Safe for all skin types
The procedure is performed in the office and generally takes about 15 minutes. Since there are minimal side effects, this is something that can easily be scheduled on your lunch break. You may potentially see small bruises or needle stick marks in the treatment area. These generally disappear within a day or two, and you can expect your smooth, hydrating results to last for at least 6 months.
Ideal Candidate for Skinvive
The ideal candidate for a Skinvive treatment is any man or woman in good overall health who is bothered by:
- Dullness
- Crepey skin texture
- Lack of vitality
This can be a great procedure if you feel like your skin just looks tired. It is important, however, to have realistic expectations. This is a skin quality procedure to give your dermal epidural layer a little more “oomph”. For some patients, this could be good for the thin, delicate tissue on the neck which is so susceptible to texture changes. Skinvive by Juvéderm® is not a stand-alone procedure. Instead, this is something that Dr. Doherty combines with other aesthetic procedures for facial rejuvenation such as a targeted skincare regime and micro-Botox® injections.
Skinvive as Part of a Comprehensive Skin Care Regime
Any aesthetic procedure is only effective if it is appropriate for your needs and if you understand exactly what it will achieve. As mentioned, Skinvive is not a stand-alone procedure. Instead, it may be an excellent treatment to incorporate into your existing skin care regime as it can boost your body’s natural ability to retain moisture. This, in turn, will plump up the tissues in the treatment area so that your skin appears smoother. It is a way to ramp up your inner glow. When combined with a good skincare regime and other aesthetic treatments such as:
- Micro-Botox® injections
- Laser skin resurfacing
- Micro-needling
- Chemical Peel
Skinvive by Juvéderm® may help you look and feel more radiant.
Skinvive by Juvéderm® Procedure & Recovery
Like any injectables treatment, Skinvive is performed in the office as an out-patient procedure. The injection itself contains lidocaine, an analgesic that will help to eliminate any discomfort. During your procedure, Dr. Doherty will strategically inject multiple micro-droplets of Skinvive under the surface of your skin. The whole treatment will take about 15 minutes, after which, you can get on with your life. You may have a little redness, but this generally dissipates within 24 hours. There are few restrictions after your procedure other than to:
- Minimize strenuous exercise
- Avoid sun exposure
- Limit alcohol consumption
You want to follow the above for the first 24 hours in order to promote healing. You should begin to notice an improvement in the appearance of your skin almost immediately. Dr. Doherty generally recommends 2 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimum results.

Skinvive FAQs
Most patients find a Skinvive treatment to be highly tolerable. The analgesic lidocaine is a component of the injection which helps to eliminate any discomfort. If you have a low pain tolerance and/or are anxious about pain, we can discuss the best options for making you feel comfortable during your initial consultation.
Technically, yes. However, unlike other fillers in the Juvéderm family, Skinvive does not increase volume in the treatment area. Instead, the hyaluronic acid in Skinvive has been modified so that it can be injected in tiny amounts just below the surface of your skin. The goal is to promote hydration by increasing your skin’s ability to retain moisture.
Initially, I recommend a series of treatments – typically 2, spaced about 4-6 weeks apart for optimum results. Then, you will need a touch-up every 6 months or so depending on how your body metabolizes the Skinvive.
Yes. This is one of its many benefits. Skinvive by Juvéderm® is FDA approved and has been extensively tested as safe for all skin tones. However, I always recommend scheduling an in-person consultation with a licensed, skilled injector before trying any new procedure.
In studies, patients had consistently hydrated, smooth, glowing skin for at least 6 months.
