Are you interested in a breast augmentation procedure, but worried about pain and discomfort associated with the procedure? Is the thought of a painful recovery holding you back from undergoing this surgery?
If you found yourself nodding along to the above questions, then you may be surprised to learn that breast augmentation doesn’t have to be uncomfortable; in fact, many patients are surprised at how little discomfort they experience throughout the recovery process.
However, that doesn’t mean that breast augmentation is pain-free. Like with all surgeries, there is some pain and discomfort associated with the recovery. Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Sean Doherty, will use a number of methods to minimize pain to ensure that his patients are as comfortable as possible. These methods include:
- Slowing down the surgical procedure to prevent unnecessary trauma
- Precisely dissecting the breast pocket so that there’s less pain
- Injecting pain and numbing medication into the chest muscle and breast during surgery so that the patient feels less pain after surgery
The worst discomfort is felt right after the surgery; this is why Dr. Doherty tries to tackle this pain head-on by pre-emptively injecting pain medication into the muscle while the patient is asleep. Doing so can help with the tight feeling that’s so common with breast augmentation. Dr. Doherty also prescribes pain medications that will last for a few days after surgery to help ease the patient into a successful recovery.
To further mitigate pain associated with the procedure, Dr. Doherty recommends that patients get up and walk around the day of their surgery. Muscles can get sore if they’re not used after surgery. Dr. Doherty even recommends that patients visit friends or eat a light meal after surgery. However, he advises against heavy exercise for the first week after the procedure, as this can increase post-operative swelling.
