Getting rid of a double chin can often feel like an impossible task. Sure, diet and exercise can work – but only after significant weight loss. And what happens when your double chin is genetic? How are you supposed to shrink it down if your genes are working against you?
Those questions are precisely why Kybella has received so much buzz lately. The FDA-approved injection uses deoxycholic acid to destroy fat cells located specifically in the submental tissue underneath the chin. Kybella is so effective that most clients see exceptional results after just 1 to 3 treatments.
But despite the glowing accolades, many patients are still hesitant about using Kybella to treat their double chins. So when it comes down to it, does Kybella really work?
The answer is a resounding yes!
At board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Doherty’s plastic surgery practices in downtown Boston and Brookline, MA, Kybella injections are used to minimize the appearance of excess fat underneath the chin and around the jawline. Dr. Doherty approaches Kybella injections in the following way:
- The first injection is typically more aggressive, in that Dr. Doherty will use more Kybella. Dr. Doherty has found that the more aggressive the first treatment, the fewer follow-up procedures are required. This robust round of Kybella injections is delivered in the central chin area, as well as around the jawline.
- After that first round, Dr. Doherty will perform the next Kybella injection in 6 to 8 weeks. Most patients need about 2 to 4 treatments to see their best results.
- Doherty can also use Kybella treatments on common areas of excessive fat, including bra rolls, knees, around C-section scars, and other areas that may not have responded to liposuction or CoolSculpting.
Patients should expect a few days of swelling after each session, as well as mild burning and soreness at the injection site. The best candidates for Kybella are patients with healthy skin with good elasticity or snap-back (patients with poor skin laxity will need to follow up their treatments with a skin-tightening procedure).
