Should I Change My Implants?

11/05/2014 by Dr. Sean Doherty

replacing breast implantsFor many women, getting breast implants is a confidence-boosting decision. But no matter how many women are happy with their breast augmentation procedures, there may come a time when women start to worry that they should change their breast implants. They know that no implant is permanent; that’s why they may start to question when the best time may be to change their implants.

At the plastic surgery practice of Sean Doherty, MD – based in Brookline, MA and serving the greater Boston area – many women seek out advice as to whether or not they should change their implants. There are many benefits to switching out implants, as Dr. Doherty has outlined:

  • Women who have saline implants may see better and more natural-looking results with gel implants. These implants feel more natural, and they also can help create a more attractive-looking breast shape. Women who want their breasts to look as natural as possible often report seeing better results with gel implants.
  • Many implant manufacturing companies provide superior warranties, discounts, and other benefits for patients who want to change their implants.

If you’re interested in changing your breast implants, it’s important to know that it’s not a simple “in and out” procedure. If it’s been a few years since your breast augmentation procedure, the skin, fat, and breast tissue around the implant may have changed and hardened. Weight loss/weight gain and pregnancy can also stretch out the breast tissue, although this issue can be addressed when the implant is being switched out.

Many times, patients may discover that they have capsular contracture, which can cause asymmetrical breast shapes as well as hardened tissue. Dr. Doherty has many techniques that can be used to address this issue, including removing the capsule or change the location of the implant. With the latter option, Dr. Doherty may choose to put the implant under the muscle, which reduces the chance of capsular contracture.

If you’re concerned about your breast implants or are ready to make the switch, schedule a consultation with Dr. Doherty at his plastic surgery practice in Brookline, MA, which serves the greater Boston area. To learn more just fill out the form in the top right corner or call (617) 735.8735.
