Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Some women report that their breasts begin to sag and droop and lose their firm nature at certain points of their lives. This can occur withwright loss, age, pregnancy, and breast feeding. Breast lift procedures, also called a mastopexy, can help give patients a youthful looking breast shape and provide a lift. Patients who have lost volume in their breasts and notice sagging may choose to combine this procedure with breast augmentation. Implants can help patients regain the full breasts of their youth.

Who is a candidate for a Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery generally provides the best results in women who have small to moderate sized breasts that have drooped. This is called ptosis. Ideally, nipples should be pointing straight out when looking in the mirror. In women who have sagging or ptotic breasts, their nipples drop and point towards the ground. Because pregnancy and breastfeeding can stretch the skin, it is best to delay breast lift procedure until after all pregnancies.

The Mastopexy Procedure

The incisions for breast lift surgery occur around the areola are under the breasts. They are sometimes similar to those necessary for a breast reduction. Dr. Doherty will tighten up the existing skin, reposition the nipple to a more appropriate and flattering location and usually not remove excess tissue. If the areolas (the tissue around the nipples) have expanded due to weight changes or pregnancy, patients may have their size reduced as well.

To add necessary fullness to their breasts, patients may request augmentation with implants as well. Having these procedures completed at the same time allows for reduced recovery time and scarring, however, for some patients, these two procedures need to spread out. The planning of these surgeries is different for each patient.
