No matter how hard some patients exercise, or how well they eat, certain areas of the body are difficult to trim down. Fortunately, liposuction is a surgical body shaping technique that has allowed many patients to get the body profile they have always wanted. Liposuction may be an appropriate treatment option for patients who have areas of fat on their bodies that do not respond to diet and exercise, including:
- Upper arms
Also called lipo-sculpture, liposuction can be combined with other procedures such as tummy tuck for best results
The Liposuction Procedure
First, Dr. Doherty will make a tiny incision near the targeted area. Next, Tumescent fluid (dilute numbing medicine called Lidocaine) is injected into the targeted area. This fluid both hydrates and numbs the areas to be liposuctioned. After this he will insert a hollow tube called a cannula. Unwanted fat cells are removed through the cannula by means of an attached suction pump.
There are several variations to the basic liposuction technique available at Boston facility. The liposuction method that best fits your needs depends on a number of individual factors, which Dr. Doherty will discuss with you. The following techniques may be used during your liposuction procedure:
- Tumescent liposuction: Fatty tissue is pre-injected with a saline solution containing small amounts of adrenaline and local anesthetic. This technique is always used by Dr. Doherty when performing liposuction in larger areas and serves to decrease blood loss, to increase the quantity of fat removed, and to improve your comfort both during and after the procedure.
- Laser Liposuction: Laser Liposuction or Lipolysis powered by SlimLipo™ and Smart Lipo™ is unlike other laser or liposuction treatment. The SlimLipo™ Smart Lipo™ procedures use advanced technology to deliver dual wavelengths of laser light, specifically designed to easily melt fat in large areas. This results is less downtime, decreased bruising, and remarkable results. Unlike simple traditional liposuction, Lipo-sculpture powered by SlimLipo™ and Smart Lipo™ is an effective device for melting fat. The technique allows Dr. Doherty to sculpt while performing liposuction and not simply tear through tissue structure. The result is less body trauma and significant fat removal and dermal heating. The heating of dermal tissue has been shown to have skin tightening results. The procedure is an effective treatment for fat reduction for body areas that are often difficult to sculpt with simple weight loss and exercise. Areas like the abdomen, hip and thigh, arm and neck respond very well to the SLIM and Smart Lipo™ treatment. Laser Lipolysis is designed for both men and women.
- Syringe suction: This method is commonly used to treat delicate areas of the body, such as the face and neck. Dr. Doherty uses a liposuction syringe rather than a suction pump in these cases, so that he can more accurately achieve finely contoured detail. A patient with a small amount of unwanted fat in the neck area would be a good candidate for this procedure.
These recent developments in technique have been instrumental in allowing Dr. Doherty to provide his patients with better results and more comfort during their liposuction procedures. Anesthesia, too, can be customized to your needs. Depending on the size of area to be treated, you and Dr. Doherty can decide on the level of anesthesia that will serve your needs.
Recovery after Liposuction
Patients will be fitted with an elastic compression garment to help reduce swelling. Most patients return to work within a few days after liposuction. Dr. Doherty recommends walking and other types of gentle exercise to maximize your blood circulation and healing ability. More demanding activities should be put off until about 3 weeks after surgery.
Some patients may only need one area of their body worked on. This may be performed under local anesthetic. This decreased the patients discomfort and post surgery recovery time, other patients wish to have several areas treated at one time. These patients often require general anesthesia. They have a more prolonged post operative course.
An important part of the surgical process will be the consultation with Dr. Doherty. He will help you decide which liposuction procedure and which type of anesthesia is safest and most appropriate for you.
